Rezolutia GPS ajunge la 2 metri pe continentul european

Lansarea unor noi sisteme terestre si spatiale a dus la imbunatatirea acuratetii GPS-ului la nivel european, ajungandu-se la o precizie de 2 metri, fata de nivelul de precizie de pana acum, adica in jurul a 20 de metri.

Antonio Tajani, vicepresedintele Comisiei pentru Politica a Transportului a anuntat ieri in cadrul unei conferinte de presa debutul oficial al lui EGNOS, sistemul european geostationar de navigatie (European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service). EGNOS este un sistem bazat pe sateliti si care imbunatateste acuratatea sistemelor navigationale din Europa.

El este bazat pe 3 sateliti geostationari de deasupra partii estice a Oceanului Atlantic si a Europei, conectate la o retea de peste 40 de statii terestre si 4 centre de control. Statiile EGNOS de la sol primesc semnale trimise de catre satelitii GPS din SUA, iar informatiile cu privire la acuratetea si calitatea semnalelor sunt trimise utilizatorului prin intermediul satelitilor geostationari.

Astfel, sistemele navigationale stabilesc pozitia utilizatorului cu o precizie de pana la 2 metri, fata de cei 20 de metri pe care ii poate detecta GPS-ul.

La sfarsitul secolului al 17-lea, Clujul intra sub dominatie austriaca, apoi devine capitala Transilvaniei. In 1848 este si un important centru revolutionar. Abia in 1974, numele este schimbat oficial in Cluj Napoca.

In ziua de azi Clujul este considerat a fi un centru important economic si cultural.

Sunt fel si fel de antrenorii,cu fel si fel de tactici,care trebuie analizate,jocul pe contre,sau pe flancuri,este bun impotriva celor ce nu au aparare solida si rapida,pe flancuri,si in care fundasii centralii nu au o inaltime destul de mare.

Au fost surprinse chiar şi poze spion cu Audi RS3 la Ingolstadt, dar asupra acestora planau multe semne de întrebare, în primul rând din cauza caroseriei în cinci uşi. Iată, însă, că noul Audi RS3 nu e inaugurat ca un hot-hatch în 3 uşi, după cum se aştepta toată lumea, ci ca unul mai practic, în versiunea RS3 Sportback.

Tabara de vara la Bran

Comuna Bran este una din cele 44 de comune ale judetului Brasov. Situat intr-un loc pitoresc, la 24 de km de Brasov pe DN 73, care uneste Brasovul de Campulung Muscel, Branul este un punct de atractie pentru turistii romani si straini.

Economia României este libera în proportie de 64,7, ceea ce o plaseaza pe locul 63 din 183 de state în clasamentul celor mai libere economii din lume, potrivit concluziilor unui raport dat publicitatii miercuri de Heritage Foundation, o reputata organizatie de analiza economica din Washington, citata de Agerpres.

Potrivit Index of Economic Freedom pe 2011, scorul României s-a îmbunatatit cu 0,5 comparativ cu editia precedenta. Desi este depasita de tari precum Bulgaria, locul 60, Ungaria, locul 51, Slovacia, locul 37, si Cehia, locul 28, România se situeaza totusi în fata Frantei, locul 64, Slovenia, locul 66, Turcia, locul 67, Polonia, locul 68, si Portugalia, locul 69. Astfel, România se claseaza pe locul 27 din cele 43 de state din regiunea Europei, iar scorul sau total este mai mare decât media globala.

Si în acest an Hong Kong se situeaza pe prima pozitie, pentru al 17-lea an consecutiv, cu un scor de 89,7, mult peste media globala de 59,7. Urmeaza în ordine, Singapore, Australia, Noua Zeelanda, Elvetia, Canada, Irlanda, Danemarca, SUA si Bahrein. Pe ultimele locuri ale clasamentului se situeaza Coreea de Nord, locul 179, cu un scor de 1,0, în timp ce Afganistanul, Irakul, Liechtenstein si Sudanul nu au primit un calificativ.

La elaborarea acestui clasament, Heritage Foundation a luat în calcul o lista de 10 criterii precum interventia statului în economie, dreptul de proprietate, politica fiscala, gradul de coruptie, libertatea muncii.

Oboseala cronica

Sindromul de oboseala cronica are cauze diverse si este diagnosticat in functie de cel putin 4 simptome dintre cele catalogate de medici (oboseala extrema, dificultati de concentrare, pierderi de memorie, dureri musculare, articulare si cefalee, ganglioni usor mariti, somn neodihnitor). Oboseala cronica poate fi stabilita doar de medic, dupa un control amanuntit, mai ales ca boala are manifestari specifice de la un pacient la altul. Dupa un tratament personalizat, stabilit de medicul curant, este important ca sa se aplice ulterior un tratament de intretinere, pentru atenuarea efectelor oboselii cronice.

Tonus slab

Un tonus slab (hipotonie) la nivelul musculaturii este o manifestare a diferitelor boli si tulburari ale nervului motor din creier care controleaza forta musculara. Tonusul slab se recunoaste usor inca din copilarie, dar diagnosticarea poate fi adesea dificila. Efectele pe termen lung se concretizeaza in slabiciune musculara. Tratamentul, in cele mai multe dintre cazuri, se face prin terapie fizica sau ocupationala, sub recomandarea medicului. O persoana cu tonus slab are nevoie de supraveghere adecvata si solutii de tratament pe termen lung.

Imbatranirea pielii

Colagenul si elastina sunt cele doua componente importante care se gasesc in structura dermei si care duc la imbatranirea pielii odata cu trecerea anilor. Oxidarea poate provoca pete de imbatranire a pielii. Totodata, razele ultraviolete imbatranesc derma, iar alte cauze pot fi: alimentatie deficitara, deshidratare, factori ereditari, poluarea, umiditatea scazuta, modul in care va ingrijiti pielea zilnic si chiar stresul de zi cu zi. Miros neplacut

Mirosul neplacut al corpului poate fi o consecinta a igienei deficitarea, dar si a unor boli digestive, afectiuni ale ficatului, diabet sau infectii. Mirosul neplacut se mai poate manifesta din cauza unei intense activitati bacteriale a glandelor sudoripare sau a unui deficit de minerale. Exista persoana care prezinta miros neplacut din cauza unui dezechilibru care afecteaza bacteriile din sistemul digestiv. Dureri musculare

Durerile musculare sunt frecvente si implica adesea si disconfort la nivelul ligamentelor, al oaselor, tendoanelor sau chiar la nivelul organelor interne. Cauzele unor dureri musculare pot fi diverse, de la suprasolicitare fizica a zonei dureroase pana la boli precum lupus sau fibromialgia (inflamarea muschilor). Durerile musculare pot aparea si ca efect secundar al unor medicamente. In conditiile in care durerile musculare persista, chiar daca s-a evitat efortul, un control medical este necesar. Organismul reactioneaza divers, iar asemenea dureri pot ascunde boli grave.

Balonare

Balonarea este cauzata de o anumita afectiune sau este o consecinta a unui stil alimentar dezordonat. Daca senzatia de balonare este repetitiva, in ciuda regimului alimentar optim, este important sa va adresezi unui medic specialist pentru a depista daca exista probleme digestive si cum pot fi tratate. Balonarea se manifesta prin gaze in exces in tubul digestiv, in special in stomac si intestine. In cazuri de balonare persistenta, este recomandata o detoxifiere de 2-3 ori pe an, necesitate prezenta in special dupa varsta de 35 de ani, cand problemele digestive devin mai frecvente.

Durata prepararii: 30 min
Marinare : 24 h
Portii: 4-6 persoane

Ingrediente: un iepure de casade 1,5 kg dezosat, o portocala, 10 frunze salvie, 3 linguride ulei de masline, sare si piper.

Ingrediente pentru sos: 6 hasme, 3 linguri de ulei de masline, 30 g unt, o lingura de capere in otet, 2 linguri de masline, o lingura de concentrat de vitel, 100 ml de vin alb, otet de Xerex.

Ingrediente mamaliga: 250 g malai, 3 tablete supa de pasare, 100 ml ulei de masline, 50 g unt si 2 lingurite de sare fina.

Mod de preparare: In ajun , taiati carnea de iepure in bucatele mici. Puneti-le intr-un castron cu salvia, uleiul, coaja si zeama de portocala. Sarati, piparati, acoperiti cu hartie si lasati sa se macereze 24 ore, la rece.

A doua zi, curatati si taiati fin hasmele, apoi rumeniti-le in uleiul cu unt. Adaugati caperele, maslinele, concentratul de vitel, vinul, putin otet de Xerex si 100 ml de apa.

Pregatiti mamaliga: puneti 1 l de apa la fiert si, cand da in clocot, adaugati tabletele, uleiul, untul si sarea, turnati malaiul in ploaie, lasati sa fiarba 10 minute, amestecand continuu.

Scurgeti bucatelele de iepure si perpeliti-le la foc iute 5-10 minute; in interior, carnea trebuie sa ramana usor rozalie. Serviti mamaliga cu carnea de iepure, acoperite cu sosul de capere.

La final puteti bate 100 ml de smantana lichida cu putina nucsoara, punand apoi o lingura pe carnea de iepure.

Aceasta reteta este specifica Italiei si este destul de rara. Sper sa va faca placere sa o gatiti si serviti si sa ne spuneti si noua cum a fost!

UE vs Romania: cat te costa sa traiesti

Desi preturile din Romania sunt uneori cu pana la 50% mai mici decat in UE, efortul cumparatorilor este pentru unele produse cu 50% mai mare. Asta, chiar facand abstractie de veniturile de cinci pana la zece ori mai mici.

Romanii consuma unele dintre cele mai ieftine alimente din UE, insa nu si daca luam in calcul puterea de cumparare. Paritatea puterii de cumparare surprinde nu diferenta dintre venituri, care in cazul Romaniei poate merge chiar la un raport de unu la zece fata de cele mai dezvoltate tari din UE. Indicatorul arata doar diferenta de preturi dintre tari, adica efortul cumparatorilor la un venit presupus egal. De exemplu, un roman care se muta in vest va avea un standard de viata aproape injumatatit pentru aceiasi bani, in timp ce un strain care vine in Romania va putea cumpara de doua ori mai multe lucruri. Insa indicele puterii de cumparare este o medie care tine cont atat de marile orase - puternic dezvoltate -, cat si de zona rurala unde predomina agricultura de subzistenta, iar bunurile si serviciile, atunci cand exista, sunt foarte ieftine. Astfel, se poate ajunge ca in marile orase costul vietii sa fie comparabil cu media europeana, iar singura diferenta sa fie cea de venituri.

Lactatele, ca in Olanda

Potrivit ultimelor date Eurostat, painea a fost anul trecut la 61% din media UE, fiind insa mai ieftina in Polonia unde s-a platit 58% din media UE 27, in Bulgaria (52% din media UE). Cea mai scuipa paine s-a gasit in Norvegia, tara in care o paine costa anul trecut cu peste 50% mai mult fata de medie. Carnea s-a situat la 58% din medie, nivel aproximativ egal cu cel din Bulgaria. Pretul maxim a fost inregistrat in Norvegia si Danemarca, cu 62% si, respectiv, 31%, peste media UE 27. Tendinta se schimba cand e vorba de lapte, branzeturi, oua, produse mai scumpe in Romania decat in multe alte tari in care puterea de cumparare e superioara. Astfel daca romanii au platit pentru ele anul trecut 93% din media pretului UE, la fel cu olandezii, polonezii au platit 63%, cehii au achitat doar 82%, germanii 92%, ungurii 89% etc. In medie, mancarea din Romania a fost cu doua puncte procentuale mai scumpa decat in Polonia, chiar daca puterea de cumparare a acestora este superioara.

Caldura, produsa mai scump decat in Finlanda

Norocul romanilor este ca administratia publica inca subventioneaza gigacaloria, altfel ar fi nevoiti sa stea iarna in frig, in conditiile in care avem printre cele mai mari preturi de productie a energiei termice din Europa. Potrivit unui studiu A.T. Kearney, pretul de productie al Gcal, fara TVA, a fost de 60 de euro, adica cat a fost si in Germania, peste cel din Finlanda (59 de euro) sau Danemarca (52 de euro). Norocul romanilor a fost o subventie medie de 34 de euro acordata pe Gcal, care a dus pretul mediu, in final, la 37 de euro.

Gazul metan, cel mai ieftin din UE

Romanii se pot bucura de cel mai ieftin gaz metan din Uniunea Europeana, ei platind, in a doua jumatate a anului trecut, doar 7,45 de euro pe un gigajoule, adica aproximativ 0,26 euro pe metru cub de gaz (1 gigajoule - echivalentul a aproximativ 26,4 metri cub de gaz, in functie de puterea calorica a sursei). Pretul acestuia este inclusiv mai mic fata de cel platit de vecinii bulgari care, in aceeasi perioada, au platit cu 9,67 euro pe gigajoule. Suntem insa avantajati de rezervele de gaz ale Romaniei, care nu se stie inca cat vor mai dura. La inceputul anului, doua treimi din consumul de gaze era asigurat de Romgaz si Petrom, restul fiind importat din Rusia. In plus beneficiaza deocamdata de ragazul dat de UE in directia liberalizarii pietei gazului. Tarile cu cel mai scump gaz sunt Suedia, cu 26,86 euro pe gigajoule si Danemarca, cu 26,77 euro pe gigajoule. In acest articol am decis sa va oferim si .... ceea ce multi clienti de-ai nostri s-au plans ca ne lipseste. Ma refer la ceea ce pare a fi "intelesul" SEO in Romania , adica servicii de pozitionare in listarea organica a unui site dupa un cuvant dat de client !!
Sigur ca facem si asa ceva , de fapt acesta este scopul oricarui demers SEO, pana la urma dar luand-o asa "grosso modo" se numeste SERP.
Termenul sună ciudat. SERPs. Dar defapt vine de la Search Engine Results Page şi este exact traducerea mot-a-mot, rezultatele livrate de Google în urma unei căutări efectuate în motorul de căutare. Ele diferă în funcţie de extensia motorului de căutare (în cazul celor de Google). Rezultatele unei căutări făcute pe Google.com şi Google.ro pot fi diferite datorită poziţionării geografice şi importanţei sporite dată paginilor locale.

Adeco Grup a organizat în premieră pentru Bacău manifestarea ”Mașina de presă”. Evenimentul, desfășurat la sfârșitul săptămânii trecute în parcarea Arena Mall, a adunat la un loc dealerii de mașini din Bacău, jurnaliștii, dar și publicul larg.

Pe lângă promovarea unui număr considerabil de mașini, evenimentul în sine a pus față în față jurnaliștii băcăuani și 37 de modele auto. Primii au avut ca sarcină testarea modelelor și notarea acestora. După trei zile de drive-test, care au inclus un off-road cu câteva dintre cele mai râvnite SUV-uri, duminică au fost dezvăluiți și câștigătorii.

La clasa mică, premiul cel mare l-a câștigat Renault Clio RS, nărăvașul cu 200 de CP furând inima jurnaliștilor. Acesta a concurat cu Mitsubishi Colt, New Chevrolet Spark, VW Polo, Seat Ibiza, Nissan Note si Skoda Fabia.

La clasa medie, câștigător a fost desemnat Audi A4. Concurență i-au stat New Opel Astra, Fiat Linea, Fiat Bravo, Dacia Logan 1.6, Dacia Logan MCV, VW Golf 6, Audi A3 si Skoda Octavia.

La clasa mare, presa a considerat că Mitsubishi Lancer s-a comportat cel mai bine. Lancerul a avut de înfruntat Mercedes S Klasse, Ford Mondeo, Jaguar XF, Renault Fluence, Renault Laguna 3 si Skoda Superb.

În fine, la categoria SUV, cea mai distractivă pentru presă, premiul cel mare l-a luat Mitsubishi Pajero, care a concurat cu Mitsubishi ASX, Mitsubishi Outlander, Mitsubishi L200, Hyundai IX 35, Range Rover Sport, Dacia Duster, Nissan Qashqai, Nissan Murano, Renault Koleos, VW Tiguan, VW Touareg, Skoda Yeti si Audi Q5.

Manifestarea a mai beneficiat și de câteva momente unice. Primul l-a constituit lansarea în Bacău a SUV-ului Mitsubishi ASX. Un al doilea a fost prezentarea ultimului model sport de la Mercedes, SLS. În valoare de aproximativ 220 de mii de euro, mașina a atras cei mai mulți curioși. HP's Mark Hurd resigns amid sexual harassment investigation

Mark Hurd is stepping down as CEO of Hewlett-Packard following an investigation into claims that he sexually harassed a former contractor to the company.

The investigation, conducted by outside legal counsel and the company's general counsel and overseen by the board, found that Hurd did not violate HP's sexual harassment policy but he did violate HP's standards of business conduct, the company said.

Cathie Lesjak, HP's CFO, will serve as interim CEO while a search committee looks for a permanent replacement for Hurd. She will retain her CFO position and has asked not to be considered for the permanent position.

"As I step into the role as interim CEO, I've never had more confidence in the company's future," she said in a conference call about the announcement.

HP discovered the situation recently when outside legal counsel sent a letter to the company on behalf of the contractor on June 29. The next day, the board was notified and launched the investigation.

The complaint was lodged by a marketing consultant who does not wish to be named, HP said.

"The announcement today has nothing to do with the operational performance of the company but is really all about Mark's behavior and judgment," said Lesjak.

So far, no civil or other litigation has been filed against Hurd, Mike Holston, HP's general counsel said.

"As the investigation progressed, I realized there were instances in which I did not live up to the standards and principles of trust, respect and integrity that I have espoused at HP and which have guided me throughout my career," Hurd said in a statement.

Comic Bill Cosby used microblogging website Twitter Monday to let his fans know he was still alive after rumors he was dead swept the internet.

As of Monday afternoon, "Bill Cosby died" was the No. 1 trending topic on Twitter, and "is Bill Cosby dead" was the No. 2 "hot topic" on Google Trends, which tracks terms entered into the search engine.

But shortly before 4:00pm ET, Cosby wrote: "Again, I'm rebuttaling [sic] rumors about my demise."

Cosby was at the center of another death rumor in February, prompting him to tweet: “As you well know, a dead person cannot rebuttal. Therefore, I am rebuttaling to tell you that when I heard the news I immediately began rebuttaling and went into denial."

He acknowledged that "rebuttal" was not used as a verb -- but added: "I don’t care, because I’m alive!"

Procesul de inscriere in directoare este unul din principalii pasi in ceea ce priveste promovarea online. Serviciul de inscriere in directoare web, executat manual, ajuta la cresterea site-ului dumneavoastra in "ochii" motoarelor de cautare.
Cu cat ocupati o pozitie mai fruntasa in motoarele de cautare, cu atat site-ul dumneavoastra o sa aiba mai multe vizite. Imaginati-va ca nimeni nu o sa caute ceva pe pagina a-2-a sau a-3-a intr-un motor de
cautare, daca gaseste ceea ce doreste pe prima pagina.
Motoarele de cautare se bazeaza pe numarul de link-uri care vin spre site-ul dumneavoastra si pe densitatea cuvintelor cheie de pe pagina dumneavoastra, pentru a putea efectua o clasificare corecta a

Chicago Blackhawks, Marty Turco Reach One-Year Deal

With the news that the Blackhawks have signed Marty Turco to replace Antti Niemi, it's time to formally look forward at what the Blackhawks have between the pipes next year. The 34-year-old netminder, who actually posted a better save percentage than Niemi last year, brings a long resume with a lot of success on it. He also brings a number of question marks, including his age.

However, considering his one-year, $1.3M price tag, there is no question that the Blackhawks got a deal. Here's some more information to consider about the University of Michigan product, who is regarded by many as one of the best puck-handling goalies in the game.

Numbers vs. the Central Division in 2009-10

vs. Detroit: 2 games, 1-1-0, 7 goals against (3.50 GAA), .892 save percentage (58/65)

vs. Nashville: 2 games, 1-0-1, 2 goals against (0.96 GAA), .964 save percentage (53/55), one shutout

vs. St. Louis: 3 games, 1-1-1, 8 goals against (3.28 GAA), .896 save percentage (69/77)

vs. Columbus: 3 games, 0-3-0, 6 goals against (2.02 GAA), .935 save percentage (87/93)

Last year, the Dallas Stars averaged 2.80 goals per game, which tied for 11th in the league last year. The Blackhawks scored 3.24 goals per game, third in the NHL. The Stars also ranked 19th in the NHL, allowing 31.2 shots on goal per game. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks allowed an NHL-best 25.1 shots per game.

The Hawks will bring back their top four defensemen, and could have an improved third pair with a youngster like Shawn Lalonde involved. Given the salary cap flexibility that team now has after Turco's deal, the Hawks could look to add a veteran to skate on the third pair, or bring back Jordan Hendry.

Dallas had the 27th-ranked penalty kill unit in the NHL last season, killing only 77.4 percent of opponents advantages. Turco will now be behind the fifth-ranked PK unit in the league in Chicago, which killed 85.0 percent.

Against other key teams in the Western Conference, Turco was also very good last year vs. Vancouver: 3 games, 1-1-1, 1.96 GAA, .929 save percentage and vs. San Jose: 5 games, 3-2-0, 2.14 GAA, .935 save percentage.

When you factor into the equation that Niemi's biggest weakness was playing the puck, Turco could be an improvement for the Blackhawks offense as well. Looking at the skilled players on the Hawks' blue line and emphasis on getting the puck up the ice with defensemen, the Hawks could become more lethal leaving their zone with a skilled puck-handling goalie like Turco.

Turco will benefit from have elite players surrounding him on Chicago's roster this year, a top-to-bottom improvement over the Dallas team he was part of last year even considering the Blackhawks' departures. He has played well against the crucial opponents for the Blackhawks, and has an opportunity with a one-year contract to play for a defending champion.

If win-loss numbers and goals against averages are considered relative to the performance of the skaters in front of him in Dallas, Turco could be more than adequate as a replacement for Niemi in Chicago for half the price.

Although I know that Chelsea Clinton's wedding was the crème de la crème celebration - a true "fairy tale" wedding, I would have to say that I would rather have a ceremony like Alica Keys'. All of these lovely photos from the weekend will create many challenges for wedding planners around the globe. Many young women planning their nuptials will want to use elements present in Alicia Keys' wedding.

It would be possible to have a more affordable version of the day, set somewhere like South Florida or parts of California. I am almost certain that other dress designers will use Vera's Grecian goddess design as "inspiration" for more affordable gowns. Not every one can afford the elements present in this weekend's ceremonies, but there are lots of creative ways to use them as inspiration.

Shark Week update: Shark Week comes back for 23rd year with Ultimate Air Jaws

It’s hard to believe that tonight’s Shark Week debut marks the show’s 23rd year of bringing humans and predators closer together than ever before. Taking place off the coast of South Africa, Shark Week focused on the behaviors of the great fish as they hunted in predatory fashion and executed an attack on a group of seals that would impress the greatest forces in military history. Ten years ago, the Discovery Channel premiered Air Jaws which focused on the attack- this week’s shark week will return to the scene of the attack and bring the viewer back to see the action first hand with a special one hour presentation of Ultimate Air Jaws.

The show starts tonight, August 1, 2010 at 9:00 p.m., ET.

The Ultimate Air Jaws special will use special state of the art technology which includes an HD camera that will slow down the attack to 2,000 frames per second. This will give viewers the chance to view the slow motion footage at a rate between 20 and 30 times slower than the average slow motion footage.

DeWitt surprised as L.A. gains versatility

SAN FRANCISCO -- Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Blake DeWitt said he had no idea what was going on when traveling secretary Scott Akasaki called him out of the indoor batting cage at AT&T Park on Saturday morning, walked him up the stairs to the visiting clubhouse, took him into manager Joe Torre's office and closed the door.

DeWitt wasn't in there long.

"I'm going to Chicago," he said when he emerged.

DeWitt is going to the Cubs for veteran left-hander Ted Lilly and infielder Ryan Theriot. The Dodgers also sent pitching prospects Kyle Smit and Brett Wallach to the Cubs. Wallach's father is Tim Wallach, the Dodgers' Triple-A manager at Albuquerque.

"This is the first time something like this has ever happened to me," said DeWitt, who had been in the Dodgers' organization since being drafted in the first round in 2004. "I haven't been following any [trade speculation]. I try not to pay too much attention to that stuff. But it happened. I appreciate the opportunity I had here, and I had a lot of fun here."

DeWitt had been the Dodgers' primary second baseman this season, a job that will now go to Theriot. But Theriot, who can play second, third, shortstop, left field and center field, also will give manager Joe Torre more flexibility in terms of late-inning defensive maneuvering and opportunities to rest regular players at those positions.

The majority of Theriot's big league experience has come at shortstop, but he was pushed to second base earlier this season by the arrival of highly touted prospect Starlin Castro

Lilly, meanwhile, has pitched far better than his 3-8 record would indicate. He has a 3.69 ERA in 18 starts and has a strikeout-to-walk ratio of better than 3:1 (89 strikeouts, 29 walks).

Originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 23rd round in 1996, the Torrance, Calif., native was traded to the Montreal Expos while still in the minors in a six-player deal on July 31, 1998.

"We've been looking to improve our rotation, and with Ted, we feel like we've got a very good group of starting pitchers for the stretch run," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said in a release issued by the club. "Ryan is versatile and can help us in the middle of the diamond as a nice complement to our existing infielders."

DeWitt was hitting .270 with .352 on-base percentage for the Dodgers this season, and although he had just 15 doubles and one home run, his play at second base had improved dramatically since spring training, when he moved there on a regular basis after spending most of his minor league and early big league career at third.

"Of all the times I've had to tell a player he was traded, this was one of the toughest telling Blake DeWitt," Colletti said in the release. "His professionalism, his passion and who he is made doing this one of the toughest moves I've made."

Smit, 22, is a combind 5-3 with a 2.35 ERA and six saves in 37 games for Class A Inland Empire and Double-A Chattanooga and was originally selected in the fifth round of the 2006 first-year player draft. Wallach, 21, was 6-0 with a 3.72 ERA in 17 games for Class A Great Lakes and was originally selected in the third round of the 2009 first-year player draft.

Jake Westbrook, Ryan Ludwick traded

After making do with fill-ins at the back end of their rotation for the better part of two months, the St. Louis Cardinals finally landed a much-needed starter Saturday by acquiring right-hander Jake Westbrook. At the same time, the San Diego Padres picked up outfield help in Ryan Ludwick in the three-team deal between the Cardinals, Padres and Cleveland Indians, reports ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.

Having been without Brad Penny since May 22 and Kyle Lohse since June 5, the Cardinals, who boast a dominant top three in their rotation, now run four deep, dropping Jeff Suppan to the fifth-starter role -- at least until Lohse returns in the next couple of weeks -- and sending Blake Hawksworth back to the bullpen. Westbrook should reside comfortably as the No. 4 starter; it'll be Suppan who suffers once Lohse is healthy, and Penny might have to fight his way back into the mix eventually, if he even heals before the season ends.

While National League-only owners have been itching for a significant name to migrate over from the American League, Westbrook will have to suffice (for now), though there's more fantasy appeal in him than you might think. He's united with noted pitching guru Dave Duncan, and don't think it's a mere coincidence that Westbrook, a pitcher who relies on command, the strength of his sinker and his ability to induce a high rate of ground balls, landed where he did. This is Duncan's kind of pitcher, and if you're playing the over/under game, Westbrook's chances at finishing with numbers better than his 4.65 ERA and 1.39 WHIP to date are greater they were before.

Not to suggest Westbrook isn't a project: PitchFx reveals that when using his slider he's surrendering hits on 33.9 percent of batted balls, which is a high number. Inside Edge backs that up: Opponents' offensive rates (AVG/OBP/SLG) against the pitch when they put it into play are .324/.415/.488. That's going to need some improvement, and not entirely in the luck department. That said, having quality defenders at both shortstop (Brendan Ryan) and first base (Albert Pujols) will help with the latter, especially since Westbrook's former team, the Indians, ranked dead last in baseball in terms of Ultimate Zone Rating (minus-37.3).

Another reason not to pour a heap of FAAB dollars into Westbrook: While 2009 sensation and Duncan reclamation project Joel Pineiro represented the best-case scenario for pitchers entering this situation, the important difference between the two is that Pineiro, at the time, had all of 2009 -- including spring training -- to work with his pitching coach, not to mention all of 2008 and half of 2007. Pineiro did bounce back from an otherwise disappointing start in 2007 to post six wins, a 3.96 ERA and 1.27 WHIP in 11 late-season starts united with Duncan; it's numbers like that which should outline the best-case scenario for the newest Cardinal.

In other words, take a look at Westbrook if you're hurting for alternatives to spend your FAAB on, but don't bust your budget if you've got more pressing needs.

As for Ludwick, the obvious reaction is that his fantasy value decreases significantly with the move to Petco Park, but don't be so hasty. In St. Louis, he was no longer guaranteed everyday at-bats, what with Jon Jay off to a red-hot start to his big league career, but in San Diego he should take over as the everyday right fielder. A greater chance of regular playing time means a greater chance that Ludwick can get back to the 20- to 30-homer level that he displayed the past two years.

Speaking to the ballpark factors, it's worth pointing out that Busch Stadium wasn't much more favorable for power than Petco; my midseason ballpark analysis ranked the venues 28th (Busch) and 29th (Petco) in terms of home runs, and don't overlook the fact Petco (0.861, 24th) actually had a higher home run factor for right-handed hitters than Busch (0.785, 28th). Why is that significant? Simple: Of Ludwick's 70 home runs since the 2008 season, 61 (87.1 percent) have been to the left of dead-center field, and 35 (exactly half) have been pulled to left field, per Hittrackeronline.com. His power, therefore, is to the one part of Petco where it won't be entirely lost.

In other words, don't expect much of a change in fantasy value for Ludwick, and in fact he might be about as useful as he has been since the beginning of last season -- meaning more valuable than he'd have been had he stayed put in St. Louis.

The two prospects involved in the deal, minor league left-hander Nick Greenwood, who goes from the Padres to the Cardinals, and minor league right-hander Corey Kluber, who goes from the Padres to the Indians, aren't of immediate fantasy significance. Neither one, in fact, might amount to much more than a back-of-the-rotation starter in future years, the most notable point with either being that Kluber boasts a high strikeout rate (9.47 per nine innings for his career, 9.98 in Double-A ball this season). He's an "old" 24 in Double-A ball, however, so don't invest much stock in that. The Indians could take a look at him this or next season, but a strong showing in Triple-A ball would be preferred before he'd be considered fantasy-relevant.

RHINEBECK, N.Y. — Sidewalks in a small village on New York's Hudson River are beginning to teem with reporters and onlookers anxious to spot A-list stars or notable politicians attending the wedding of Chelsea Clinton and her longtime boyfriend.

The crowd started forming mid-morning Saturday after weeks of intrigue and secrecy about a ceremony with a VIP guest list said to include such luminaries as Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg.

Donna Vena of Mount Kisco, N.Y., says she drove 50 miles to Rhinebeck in the hopes of spotting a celebrity. She had a camera slung over her shoulder.

Former President Bill Clinton and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton were seen Friday exiting a van arm-in-arm outside the Beekman Arms Hotel.

Their daughter, 30-year-old Chelsea, is set to marry investment banker Marc Mezvinsky on Saturday night.

RHINEBECK, N.Y. (AP) — Chelsea Clinton was poised to marry her longtime boyfriend at an exclusive estate along New York's Hudson River after weeks of intrigue, secrecy and buzz that caused hundreds to crowd into this small village hoping to catch of a glimpse of a former president, a secretary of state or their publicity-shy daughter.

The 30-year-old daughter of Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton was expected to wed her boyfriend, investment banker Marc Mezvinsky, at a ceremony Saturday evening with 400 to 500 guests. Details of the wedding were kept fanatically close to the vest, with shopkeepers, innkeepers, vendors and restaurateurs sworn to secrecy. Roads were closed, the skies were closed over the estate and inconvenienced neighbors were soothed with a complimentary bottle of wine.

As police, private security and Secret Service prowled the town of 8,000, curious residents and tourists alike craned their necks to try to spot an A-list guest, a notable politician or, best of all, a Clinton.

Hundreds of people gathered outside the hotel where many of the guests are staying were rewarded Friday night when the Clintons exited a van arm-in-arm outside the Beekman Arms Hotel.

Shortly before 11 p.m., the former first lady, wearing a long, green dress, waved to the cheering crowd waiting behind metal barricades and quickly went into the hotel. The couple left about a half-hour later.

Earlier in the day, the former president made an appearance around lunchtime, popping out of a car and walking a few blocks, greeting people on his way to a restaurant. Looking fit and relaxed in blue jeans and a black knit shirt, he gave easy answers to questions shouted by well-wishers and reporters.

How are you?

"We're all fine."

"We love it here," he said. "Chelsea loves the area as well."

And what do you think of Mr. Mezvinsky, Mr. President?

"I like him very much," Clinton said. "I really do. I admire him. Hillary feels the same way."

The sight of an ex-president captivated many in the crowd.

"We thought it was great that he walked down here," said Carol Chestney, of Rhinebeck. "He could have parked right outside. He looks great."

After lunch, Clinton slowly wound his way out of the restaurant, taking time to shake hands with the kitchen staff and customers, who took pictures of him with their cell phones. The restaurant's owner said it would be impolite to reveal what he had for lunch.

He emerged to an enthusiastic crowd of hundreds of people who shouted, "We love you!" and "Congratulations!"

True to Chelsea Clinton's reluctance to be in the spotlight, the mysteries of the wedding continued right into Saturday — much of it centered on a VIP guest said to include such luminaries as Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg.

"Maybe I'll see someone, maybe I won't," said Rhinebeck resident Linda Gray, as she sat on a sidewalk bench and watched the hubbub.

Madeleine Albright, who was secretary of state during Clinton's second term as president; Vernon Jordan, former adviser to the president; and movie producer Steve Bing were seen Friday night at the Beekman Arms Hotel.

Meanwhile, a longtime Clinton family friend denied that the wedding would cost more than $1 million. The friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity in keeping with the family's desire for privacy, said the cost will not exceed six figures. Wedding experts told The Associated Press the wedding could cost $2 million to $3 million, while other outlets said it could hit $5 million.

Andrea Alvin, who lives on the same road as the Astor Courts estate, told The Associated Press that state police notified her three or four days ago that the road would be closed from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and gave her a sticker so she could get in and out. She came home Thursday to find a bottle of wine from the nearby Clinton Vineyards, courtesy of the wedding planner. It came with a note apologizing for any inconvenience and included a phone number to call if there were any problems.

"I think it's great. It's a happy occasion," she said. "It's good publicity for the town. It's just a weekend. What's losing a weekend in the summer?"

Chelsea and Mezvinsky were friends as teenagers in Washington, and both attended Stanford University. They now live in New York, where Mezvinsky works at G3 Capital, a Manhattan hedge fund. Mezvinsky worked previously at Goldman Sachs as an investment banker.

Clinton completed her master's degree in public health earlier this year at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University.

Mezvinsky is a son of former U.S. Reps. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky of Pennsylvania and Ed Mezvinsky of Iowa, longtime friends of the Clintons. His parents are divorced.

'American Idol': Kara is reportedly out [Updated]

The musical chairs at the judge's table of "American Idol" continue, as reports circulated Friday morning that Kara DioGuardi has been fired from the hit series.

TMZ reported that the songwriter/judge has been let go. That follows Thursday's announcement from Fox that Ellen DeGeneres, who appeared for only a single season, has also departed the program. Meanwhile, Deadline.com identified actress/singer Jennifer Lopez as a judge when the show returns for its 10th season next year.

The reshuffling is far from over as the network scrambles to replace star judge Simon Cowell, who left the show in May amid great fanfare. Of the judges from last season, only Randy Jackson remains a judge on what is still America's most popular television series.

Executives for Fox and the series could not be immediately reached for comment.

Obama blamed the media for creating a "phony controversy" over Shirley Sherrod.

"In the last month, what has been the rose and what has been the thorn?" Barbara Walters asked in the pre-taped, hour-long interview.

"In the last month the rose has to be a couple of days we took in Maine with Michelle, and Sasha and Malia," he said. "They're not quite teenagers yet, so they still like you."

Asked what the "thorn" had been, the president sighed: "Where do I begin?"

"Obviously the country has gone through a tough stretch ... Of course, you think about what the American people have gone through, losing jobs, seeing their home values go down, their 401Ks declining... I don't spend a lot of time worrying about me. Linda Hogan Engaged to 21-Year-Old Boyfriend

NEW YORK (CBS) Linda Hogan is engaged to marry her much-younger boyfriend.

Hulk Hogan confirmed via his publicist that his ex-wife, 50, is set to marry Charlie Hill, and that he wishes the couple well.

"Hulk is very happy for Linda," his publicist told E! News on Wednesday, "and wishes them both well."

Hill, at 21, is one year younger than Hogan's daughter, Brooke, and two years older than son Nick.

According to published reports, the two plan to exchange vows sometime next summer aboard Linda Hogan's yacht, which she named Alimoney.

Hulk Hogan came into the public eye as a professional wrestler, but the rest of his family became famous after they starred on the VH1 reality show "Hogan Knows Best." The couple divorced in 2007.

Hulk Hogan is also set to marry again - he is engaged to girlfriend Jennifer McDaniel.

Jack Roush Plane Crash Not Fatal

Jack Roush plane crash news is nothing new. The last Jack Roush plane crash was quite serious, as Roush suffered a serious crash in 2002 that could have killed him.

But, despite his aviation record, he is best known for being one of NASCAR's most powerful team owners. As such, the stock car community was worried when they heard he had gotten into a crash yesterday in Wisconsin. But, although reports were that the latest Jack Roush plane crash caused serious injuries, he was able to walk away from it.

Two days after the Brickyard 400, the owner had free time on his hands to see the AirVenture air show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. To get there, he registered a Beechcraft Premiere private jet to Roush Fenway Racing. But when that jet was reported to be in a landing accident last night, eyebrows were raised.

But the Jack Roush plane crash reports were not so grim, as the pilot and his passenger got out of the wreck. Roush was flying with friend Brenda Strickland, and they were reported to have walked out on their own power.

According to the Experimental Aircraft Association, which hosted the air show, Roush's plane crash left him in serious but stable condition. He may have facial lacerations and could face surgery for his injuries, but they are not said to be life-threatening.

The last Jack Roush plane crash was more serious, as he crashed near Talladega in 2002. In that case, he crashed a P-51 aircraft into a lake, and was in danger of drowning. He was pulled out just in time by a nearby retired Marine, and he ultimately had serious but non-life threatening injuries there as well.

Although each Jack Roush plane crash was not fatal, NASCAR is all too used to things working the other way around. Despite surviving wrecks on the ground, NASCAR icons have not been so lucky off the ground. Alan Kulwicki and Davey Allison each lost their lives in plane wrecks in 1993, to go along with Roush's scares.

However, yesterday was another near miss, although his condition is still serious. But all that the second Roush plane crash will do is leave him in the hospital for awhile, it would appear. His team will go on, as Roush drivers Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards and Greg Biffle fight to make the Chase for the Cup.

On John Bolz, John Carroll, Perez Hilton, blogging, and making money

John Bolz is the number on Google Trend as this blog post is written. The problem is no one knows why. But one has to use John Bolz and "grover cleveland alexander" to generate traffic, views, and ad revenue for their blogs.

When San Francisco Chronicle Columnist and all-around good man John Carroll wrote about bloggers and wondered how they make money (in "the blog dilemma" which should have been designed to be found in a search), he looked at it, it seemed unknowingly, from the perspective of one who's used to working for someone else.

Perez Hilton shows the way

The most successful bloggers own their own blogs: Perez Hilton comes to mind. Now, if you're going to tell me what you think of Perez' content, you're not going to learn anything, so you're not the person I'm trying to reach.

Perez Hilton owns his own blog, and yet he's "multi-platform:" he has millions of Twitter followers. His videos can be found on his own YouTube channel, where, like me, Perez is a YouTube Partner. That means he earns revenue from his video views. He's got over 62,000 YouTube subscribers as of this writing. Me? I'm just over 5,000 YouTube subscribers, but hey, I love every one of them.

But my point is Perez has his own channel and his own "brand" that's not all in one place. Regardless of what you think about Perez Hilton, you know what you're going to get when you visit his blog. That "brand" has led to offers of up to $20 million for his blog.

What John Carroll missed is a look at the blogger who's an entrepreneur. Before the days of journalists looking for work as bloggers, there were journalists who did blogging, specifically Justin Hall.

Hall's called a pioneer blogger, but the point here is that Justin did his own thing as a blogger and gained fame doing it.

I encourage people who blog at Zennie62.com, or any of the blogs in the Zennie62 network, to maintain or start their own blogs and cross post their work to mine. I want each person to grow their own online value. That's what John Carroll, ever the good man, misses. But it's also my fault for not following up with Carroll on my desire to video interview him

See, John Carroll is a star. Like many long-time journalists and columnists he has a following, but he's not "branded" in the way Perez Hilton is. He's not on video or mobile devices. He doesn't have his own widget. He should have all of this, and more.

In short, John Carroll doesn't have that set of platforms that, added together with respect to traffic, he can sell for money, or make money from. It's a welcome direction given the shrinking print media industry.

The problem is the death of print media is forcing people online, where they're quite literally lost in Internet space. Many people: journalists, publicists, and public relations specialists, are totally lost.

And they're not helped by those who are in the same professions who take money from them with these seminars and panel discussions, claiming that they know the Internet way, when in point of fact, those same persons don't even have a clear Internet presence and brand. So, it becomes the blind leading the blind, and both eventually get frustrated either because they aren't making real money or the people have realized they don't know and have stopped paying them.

If you are asked to pay over $100 to attend a social media "how-to" function, run, don't walk, to the nearest exit. Don't do it.

Just do what Former San Francisco Chronicle Columnist Glenn Dickey did, and at my pushing, about five years ago: he started his own website called Glenn Dickey.com. Plus, he's at Examiner.com And while I think he could improve on his Internet presence and website monetization by a ton, he's at least created an online home that has some value (the paywall's a bad idea). The Examiner gives him another platform that helps drive awareness of the "Glenn Dickey" brand and thus, get more traffic.

So, John Carroll, you can make money blogging, but you've got to have your own blog and brand. In short, you have to think not in terms of working for someone else, but in terms building your own media business.

Chocomize: What Does it Mean?

Chocomize is a chocolate candy creation that came into existence merely by chance. Nick LaCava left some candy in the backseat of his car on a hot day and something interesting was created. Among the gooey candies was dark chocolate, marshmallows, granola and Gummi Bears. Not wanting it to go to waste, LaCava decided to throw the candy into the freezer.

His friends later challenged him to eat the accidental creation and it turned out that it tasted great!

"It actually was really delicious," LaCava stated . "That was the moment that the lightbulb went off in our heads."

Needless to say the friends started a business and not sells their creations to the public.

The CPSC says the girl was found in between the Nap Nanny and the crib bumper. There have been 22 reports of children hanging or falling out of the Nap Nanny despite being harnessed in.

The recalled Nap Nanny's were sold between January 2009 and July 2010. Consumers who have first generation Nap Nanny's without "D"-rings should stop using the product and contact the company for an $80 voucher toward the purchase of a new Nap Nanny. 2011 Ford Explorer: Redesigned SUV Unveiled

Ford unveiled its redesigned Explorer SUV this morning in New York’s Herald Square. The new vehicle, which borrows design cues from Ford’s former Land Rover unit, represents the biggest change by far in Ford’s approach to its bread-and-butter family hauler and onetime sales superstar.

Company officials say the new Explorer reflects CEO Alan Mulally’s philosophy of developing a broader range of vehicles that can be tailored closely to what customers want. In some ways the Explorer also seeks to appeal to a wider audience than ever before.

In the early 1990s the then-brand-new Explorer defined the mid-size SUV category. Its only real competition at the time came from the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Chevrolet S-10 Blazer, both vehicles that wore their he-man truck credentials in plain view. The Explorer also had a rugged outdoorsy image, but was just soft and friendly enough to attract a wide range of baby-boomers who wanted to at least look adventurous even if they never drove off-road.

The new vehicle casts an even wider net. It can still tow a 5,000-pound trailer, but its looks and mechanical underpinnings are more car-like — designed for a smooth, quiet ride. The standard engine is a 290 horsepower V6. but instead of an optional V8 with more power, Ford is offering the truck with a 237-horsepower four-cylinder EcoBoost engine that is supposed to give V6 performance with 30% better fuel economy. The real history-making announcement: The smaller engine will cost more than the larger, more powerful one. Ford has not revealed pricing for the vehicle or the optional engine.

The Entourage Season 7 Episode 4 is all about advancing Vince’s career and a little more story advancement for the rest of the gang. Turtle gets a business proposal from Alex but he is not too sure about it. There is definitely some doubt present in the mind of Turtle about actually going through a deal with Alex, because Alex is way too smart for Turtle and Turtle knows it, but at the same time Turtle needs a business opportunity because he wants to make something of himself other than hanging around in Vince’s mansion. What is going to happen to Turtle would be clear only in the future episodes but for now doubt clouds him.

Johnny Chase aka Drama starts off rather oddly with John Stamos who is his costar. This start could mean a difficult relationship between them, but it seems there is a better turn of events coming soon to these two.

The character Ari gets a hint of success and somewhat of advancement in the NFL deal that he has been after. This is just another progression step that he was working and trying so hard for. There is however one thing that he has to watch out for, and that is the intention of Lizzie. Ari is very doubtful of Lizzie and there is potential tension there.

Scott and Eric seem to be moving towards an area of agreement concerning the advancement of Vince’s career because their company’s future also depends on it, so there is definitely good news there for Vincent and his fans.

What is Prader-Willi syndrome?

Prader-Willi Syndrome is an uncommon genetic disorder that causes poor muscle tone, low levels of sex hormones and a constant feeling of hunger among other things. People with this disorder have a problem with their hypothalamus, part of the brain that controls feelings of fullness or hunger. Thus, these people never feel full and have a constant urge to eat, ultimately leading to life-threatening obesity.

Prader-Willi syndrome in most cases result from a spontaneous genetic mutation in genes on chromosome 15 that occurs at conception. In rare cases, the mutation is inherited.

What are the symptoms of Prader-Willi syndrome?

Often people with this disorder experience symptoms in two stages.

Stage 1 - Infants with Prader-willi syndrome can have low muscle tone affecting their ability to such properly. Because of this, they need special feeding assistance to help them eat and they may have problems gaining weight. The situation gets better as they grow older.

Stage 2--Between the ages of 1 and 6 years, the children with the disorder may feel constant hunger, have an insatiable appetite, meaning they never feel full.

Although they eat more, but because they have less muscle mass, they do not burn as many calories as the normal peers leading to the development of life-threatening obesity if the diet is not kept under strict control.

Other symptoms that may affect people with Prader-Willi syndrome include

Behavioral problems such as stubbornness or temper tantrums

Delayed motor skills and speech due to low muscle tone

Cognitive problems, ranging from near normal intelligence to mild intellectual and developmental disabilities; learning disabilities are common

Repetitive thoughts and verbalizations

Collecting and hoarding of possessions

Picking at skin

Low sex hormone levels

Prader-Willi syndrome is considered a spectrum disorder, meaning that not all symptoms are expected to occur in everyone with the disorder and the symptoms may range from mild to severe.

People with Prader-Willi syndrome often have some special mental strengths as well, such as skills in jigsaw puzzles. If obesity can be prevented, people with the syndrome can live a normal lifespan.

What are the treatments for Prader-Willi syndrome?

There is no cure for Prader-Willi syndrome. But, early intervention can help people with the disorder build skills for living a better life. Early diagnosis is essential and luckily a health care provider can simply do a blood test to check for Prader-Willi syndrome.

Exercise and physical activity can help control weight gain and develop motor skills. Speech therapy may also help with oral skills.

Human growth hormone can help increase height, decrease body fat, and increase muscle mass. However, nothing can help control appetite in those with Prader-Willi syndrome.

Longtime journalist Daniel Schorr dies at age 93

Daniel Schorr, a reporter and commentator who over 60 years grew from a feisty young gun to a well-respected and often-skeptical elder statesman of television and radio, died yesterday at a Washington hospital.

He was 93 and until early this month was still offering regular commentaries on NPR. His last commentary on "Weekend Edition" aired July 10.

He was an impassioned defender of free speech even when he abhorred its content. He once publicly denounced his boss Ted Turner's call for a ban on violent movies, and he became unlikely friends with fellow First Amendment activist Frank Zappa.

Schorr was also a frequent critic of what is now often called "the mainstream media," resigning from CBS in 1976 because he felt the network was too timid when he came under fire for leaking the contents of a Congressional report on illegal FBI and CIA activities.

Schorr's achievements over 60 years included three Emmys for news reporting, 1972-1974, and a spot on the late President Richard Nixon's "enemies list."

Those honors stemmed from the same material. Schorr was known in the early 1970s for his hard-hitting coverage of the Nixon White House.

When the "enemies list" was released, Schorr read it on the air and professed surprise to find himself at No. 17.

Three years after he left CBS, he became Turner's first hire at the fledgling CNN. He stayed until CNN did not renew his contract in 1985 and then moved to NPR, where he spent the rest of his career as a regular commentator on several programs – notably "Weekend Edition" with Scott Simon.

In his final commentary, Schorr still flashed the wry, bemused style that became his latter-day trademark.

Discussing the heightened camaraderie between President Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at their last meeting, Schorr said they were "condemned to be friends" because of their countries' strategic interests.

"Nobody else in broadcast journalism – or perhaps any field – had as much experience and wisdom," Simon said yesterday. "He was playful, funny and kind. In a business that's known for burning out people, Dan Schorr shined for nearly a century."

Born in the Bronx to Jewish immigrant parents, Schorr broke into the news business at the age of 12. He saw an injured woman on the sidewalk near his home in the Bronx and after summoning help phoned in a tip to the Bronx Home News. He later recalled that he was paid $5.

He joined CBS as one of the last new members of the legendary Edward R. Murrow's news team. He opened CBS's Moscow bureau in 1955, but was not allowed to return to Russia after he scored an exclusive interview with Soviet Prime Minister Nikita Khruschev and complained about Soviet censorship.

He subsequently clashed with American Presidents Eisenhower, Kennedy and Nixon as well, and was accused of self-serving behavior by CBS in the leak of the CIA/FBI report.

None of this led him to soften his approach or his views. After the Supreme Court ruled against continuing the Florida Presidential election vote in 2000, Schorr called it "a judicial coup . . . . led by a Gang of Five."

In a 2003 interview, he reflected on his NPR r position and called it "a satisfying home for the evening of my career. I no longer pursue scoops, but concentrate on the context and the meaning of things. I interact with journalists a third to half my age who seem to regard me as a walking history book.

"If asked, I tell them what lessons I have learned over the past 60-odd years. And since there are today more pressures than ever to conform, to avoid rocking the boat, I'm prone to advise: At least once in your lifetime take a risk for a principle you believe in, even if it brings you up against your bosses."

Schorr is survived by his wife Lisbeth, a son and a daughter.

Yahoo Shares Down In 2nd Quarter

Yahoo shares took a sharp fall on Tuesday as quarterly revenue growth of two percent fell short of expectations of analysts on Wall Street.

Yahoo said its 2nd quarter net profit rose 51 percent over a year earlier to 213 million dollars. Per share earnings were at 15 percent, better than the 14 percent analysts forecasted.

While quarterly net profits and earnings per share topped analyst expectations, revenue increased by a mere 2 percent in the quarter ending June 30 to 1.6 billion dollars.

Yahoo’s slow growth was a sharp contrast to Google’s quarterly revenue growth reached 24 percent.

Yahoo shares dropped 6.25 percent to 14.25 dollars in after-hours trading after the results were announced, after gaining 0.66 percent before the market closed.

Yahoo said it expected third-quarter revenue growth to push to between 1.57 and 1.65 billion dollars.

Yahoo Chief Executive Officer Carol Bartz said the company is pleased that they “continued to deliver strong operating income and margin expansion,” even if they “were at the low end of our revenue guidance.”

Bartz said Yahoo gained market share in the lucrative search and advertising market in the quarter, but still didn’t meet expectations.

Yahoo’s search advertising revenue declined by eight percent in the quarter while display advertising revenue increased by 19 percent. “Display growth was very strong and search is stabilizing,” Bartz acknowledged.

China oil spill spreads but not as big as BP oil spill in Gulf

China officially doubled the size of the oil spill caused by an explosion last week at the port city of Dalian. The China oil spill is now 165 square miles, but still just a fraction of the size of the BP oil spill in Gulf.

The estimated size of an oil spill off China's northeast coast doubled Wednesday, as workers raced against the clock to contain a growing environmental disaster.

Oil is now spread over about 165 square miles of water, according to Chinese officials.

By comparison, though, that's still nowhere near the magnitude of the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, estimated at 2,700 square miles of visible surface slick, according to the Associated Press on July 16. (See interactive map of BP spill from the New York Times here.)

Chinese oil workers struggled to contain the spill, with dramatic photos from Greenpeace China showing two men thrashing around in oil-clogged waters, trying to keep afloat.

Firefighters rescued the two men. But China's state-run newswire Xinhua reported that another firefighter died in a separate incident after a wave swept him away while he was trying to fix a boat's pump under water.

The disaster began Friday in the port city of Dalian when an oil pipeline exploded. Crude oil leaked into the Yellow Sea, then burned in a huge firestorm for 15 hours. Dalian is China's second biggest oil import port.

The affected Chinese province mobilized "all staff under the age of 50" at its maritime affairs office to join in the cleanup, Xinhua reported. Tourist beaches near Dalian were closed. As of Tuesday, 40 special "oil-skimming" vessels, 800 boats, and oil-eating bacteria had joined the fight, Xinhua said.

While initial estimates were that the port would remain closed for a week to 10 days, according to the China Securities Journal, shipping container operations at Dalian Port returned to normal by Tuesday at 11 a.m.

In a statement posted on its website Tuesday, Greenpeace China's head climate campaigner Yang Ailun said the accident highlighted the need for serious energy reform and a shift to renewable sources.

"From the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of Dalian to the numerous coal mine accidents, it is tragically obvious that economic development built upon fossil fuels is unsustainable and comes at a high price," Yang said.

As of 2006, China depended on oil for 20 percent of its energy needs, the second-largest source after coal, at 70 percent, according to the US Department of Energy.

Google Launches New Ad Format for Images

Google image searches started looking a little different Tuesday.

The Internet search giant launched a new type of ad format that will allow advertisers to include a thumbnail image alongside text in ads that appear on Google Images.

The new format, called Image Search Ads, will only appear only on Google Images for now, but Ben Ling, Google’s director of search products, said the company would explore adopting the format on other products, including the company’s search engine.

The new ads represent the latest in a series of moves by the Mountain View, Calif.-based Google to squeeze out additional revenue from its various Internet products. The company said it expected the new ads to command a premium over simple search ads that are currently available on Google Images, but they declined to provide additional details.

Like the text ads on Google.com’s search results page, the image search ads will be clearly marked as sponsored results and set apart from non-paid results.

Google also said it was redesigning Google Images, which serves up more than 1 billion page views per day. The redesign, which will be rolled out through this week, features a faster user interface that will show up to 1,000 images on a single page.

The new interface features a new “hover pane”–or pop-up window–that will make it easier for users to quickly see a larger view of a selected thumbnail. The redesign will also enable users to quickly click on the website that contains a selected image.

Shares in Google are down about 25% this year amid concerns about the company’s growth rate, intense regulatory scrutiny in Europe and the U.S. and questions about the company’s ability to generate revenue from the mobile Web.

Truck containing body parts blocks RI street

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — It's an innocent enough looking tractor-trailer, except for the fact that it's blocking a street in downtown Providence. But what's inside may give the heebie-jeebies to some.

A spokesman for medical instrument maker Smith & Nephew told The Providence Journal the truck contains human body parts as well as body parts models the company's using to demonstrate it's endoscopic surgery instruments at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine meeting at the Rhode Island Convention Center.

The body parts, mostly isolated joints, are used so surgeons can get a feel for the company's instruments, or sharpen their skills.

The truck has been parked in the street with permission from the city since Tuesday and is scheduled to leave Friday.

Kinect playable at Macy's months before launch

If you just can't wait to see how Microsoft Kinect works, be sure to run down to select Macy's stores nationwide over the next few months to try it out.

According to the retail company, it will be giving customers the chance to "test drive" its motion-gaming platform at 13 retail outlets around the U.S. on Thursdays through Sundays from now through September 30. The hours of operation are noon to 8 p.m. local time Thursday through Saturday, and noon to 6 p.m. local time on Sunday.

Unfortunately, the Kinect won't be available in every Macy's location. According to the company, it will mostly be available in major cities, including New York, Chicago, Atlanta, and Miami. Smaller cities, like McLean, Va., and Bellevue, Wash., are also included in the list.

According to a Microsoft representatives, customers will be able to play Kinect Adventures, Kinectimals, Kinect Joy Ride, and Kinect Sports in-store.

Microsoft Kinect could be a major revenue generator for Microsoft. Sandeep Aggarwal, an analyst at Carris, recently predicted that Kinect could generate $1 billion in revenue for Microsoft during its first year of availability. It would seem that Kinect's placement in Macy's stores could help the company generate the sales to reach that figure.

Reports: Bulls add guard Watson

The Bulls' search for depth has continued with the apparent addition of former Warriors point guard C.J. Watson, according to multiple reports.

The deal, according to reports, is a sign-and-trade.

Watson's likely role in Chicago will be to backup All-Star guard Derrick Rose. Watson averaged 10.3 points and 2.8 assists per game this past season.

With Carlos Boozer, Ronnie Brewer and Kyle Korver already having signed with Chicago, Watson becomes the Bulls' fourth major addition of the offseason.

Lightning acquire Simon Gagne from Flyers for Matt Walker, pick

The Tampa Bay Lightning acquired speedy winger Simon Gagne from the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday for defenseman Matt Walker and a fourth-round pick.

Gagne trade rumors had circulated throughout the offseason, but a move was believed to be in limbo because of uncertainty about where Ilya Kovalchuk would land. The trade was announced several hours after Kovalchuk said he was returning to the New Jersey Devils, though Lightning general manager Steve Yzerman called the timing "totally coincidental.".

Yzerman said that he and Flyers GM Paul Holmgren began talking about possible trades at the draft. The Lightning were looking to add another top-six forward and said Gagne will be a good fit.

"I like his all-around game," Yzerman said. "He plays in all situations: power play, penalty kill, even strength. He's a responsible defensive player. He has speed and can score goals."

Gagne played his entire career with the Flyers, recording 259 goals and 524 points in 664 games. He ranks ninth on the all-time Flyers list for goals, 10th for points and 11th for power play goals (72). He topped 40 goals in the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, with a career-best 47 in the first season.

Last season, Gagne needed hernia surgery and was held to 17 regular-season goals. But he scored nine playoff goals as the Flyers reached the Stanley Cup Final for the first time since 1997. His return from a broken toe in Game 4 of the second round was crucial to the Flyers' overcoming a 3-0 series deficit to the Boston Bruins.

Gagne, 30, had to waive a no-movement clause to facilitate the trade.

"I'm really looking forward to playing with guys like (Vincent) Lecavalier, (Steven) Stamkos and (Martin) St. Louis," he said.

Yzerman said he's aware of Gagne's injury history — also a concussion-shortened season in 2007-08 — and pointed out the broken toe is something that could happen to any player. He said Gagne will be motivated next season to prove he's healthy.

"I'm comfortable that he's healthy now," Yzerman said, "and will start the season healthy. ... I believe he's over all the injuries that he's had in the past."

The 6-4, 215 Walker appeared in 66 games for the Lightning last season, recording two goals, three assists and 90 penalty minutes. The Flyers have been beefing up on defense this offseason, trading for Andrej Meszaros and signing Sean O'Donnell.

"This was a move to solidify our defense," said Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren. "Matt Walker is a right shot defenseman that we like; he brings size, grit and toughness to our back end."

Walker, 30, is signed through the 2012-13 season at a cap hit of $1.7 million a season. Losing that contract — and earlier Meszaros' $4 million cap hit — will give Yzerman flexibility when he has to negotiate a new deal with Stamkos after this season.

Gagne, who makes $5.25 million, becomes an unrestricted free agent after this season. Trading Gagne allowed the Flyers to get back under the salary cap.

"Gagne played 10 seasons for the Flyers and was not only a good player for us, but also handled himself in a first-class manner on and off the ice," Holmgren said.

The Ruling Class Versus the Country Class

The July-August issue of the American Spectator carries a long piece by Angelo Codevilla about what Professor Codevilla calls the "ruling class" and the "country class" and the differences between the two. It's a lengthy, somewhat Manichean piece full of sweeping generalizations, and I don't agree with all of it, particularly the foreign-policy parts, but it's worth a look for those interested in what we have called here the "arrogance of the elites." It's particularly strong on the weakness of the Republicans: "The Republican Party did not disparage the ruling class, because most of its officials are or would like to be part of it." And there are some good lines: "Since when and by what right does intelligence trump human equality? Moreover, if the politicians are so smart, why have they made life worse?"

His suggestion: "Reducing the taxes that most Americans resent requires eliminating the network of subsidies to millions of other Americans that these taxes finance, and eliminating the jobs of government employees who administer them."

He also wants more citizen involvement in government: "The grandparents of today's Americans (132 million in 1940) had opportunities to serve on 117,000 school boards. To exercise responsibilities comparable to their grandparents', today's 310 million Americans would have radically to decentralize the mere 15,000 districts into which public school children are now concentrated."

One of Alex Jones popular feature films posted on his YouTube Channel “The Obama Deception” has been censored, but there is a big question here : is this just a marketing scheme ?

Jones accused someone or some agency hacked into his YouTube organization account and started to delete his files specifically a movie titled “The Obama Deception”. Fortunately, they were able to change the pass code before any additional damage could be done. From my personal view if someone deleted those files he didn’t succeed anything because the only thing that the owner had to do was to backup those files.

Jones claims that this was “an inside job”, by either a Google or a YouTube employee who gave the pass code to someone. YouTube has to start an investigation and backtrack the IP addresses to see where the original IP address is located. He also declared that this kind of acts are serious crimes against free speech and democracy and his movies were censored because they criticize the government and the New World Order , raising many questions about what their true goals are.

Or this could be just some marketing scheme to increase the popularity and feed the conspiracy maniacs ? We can’t know for sure, we live in a world dominated by chaos and I personally don’t care about what they’re doing , I’ll live my life peaceful and you should do the same. From my point of view, this world is going crazier everyday and we don’t have many days left until something cracks or probably God will take attitude.

The town of Jim Thorpe has much to offer and is one of the renown sightseeing destinations in the Poconos. The Old Jail Museum in Jim Thorpe is legendary. Aside from being a chlling experience, it's well-known for serving as the location of an execution of Molly Maguire members in the early 1900's. Prior to his execution, Alexander Campbell maintained his innocence and placed his hand on the wall. The handprint of Campbell can still be seen on the wall inside the Carbon County prison.

The town of Jim Thorpe, PA is facing a legal battle with the legendary athlete's son, who is demanding his remains be exumed and transported back to Oklahoma-where he's from. His son resents having his father's remains exploited as a tourist attraction and is suing to have them returned.

Outside of the state of Pennsylvania, Jim Thorpe is an obscure town to many. For those of us in PA and even South Jersey, it's a great place to visit and is reminisicient of New Hope and the likes.

This writer states, "All in all, burying Jim Thorpe’s remains near where The Office takes place seems weird to me, and I’d be surprised if they didn’t end up back in Oklahoma. This, of course, is bad news for the town who’s entire economy is based on a single athlete, but we’ve seen recently how that’s not exactly the greatest plan to begin with." And, this couldn't be further from the truth.

So how can you make this process easier, less painful and cut your accountancy fees?

Well buying an accounting software package is one way.

First of all you need to decide whether you are going to keep your accounting records manually, that is using pen and paper, or whether you are going to computerize the process.

If you decide that computerizing the process is the way to go then you need to decide whether to buy an accounting software package, for example Sage or Quicken, or whether a spreadsheet, such as Microsoft Excel will suit your needs better.

As a general rule if you are a cash business that just needs to record income and expenditure then you are better off using a spreadsheet.

and

You are computer literate or are willing to learn!

They will also try and upgrade you to the next version on a regular basis, but if the software is doing everything you need then there is no need to upgrade.

Of course, you could also pay someone to do your accounts for you, either your accountant or a bookkeeper the payoff being you don't have to do it yourself and it frees you up to actually run your business!

Carte Goodwin Clears Path for Senate to Extend Unemployment Benefits

Democrats have a chance to extend unemployment benefits, now that West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin has appointed his former aide, Carte Goodwin, to replace the late Sen. Robert Byrd. The party cannot expect Goodwin to support climate change legislation that puts a price on carbon, however.

Manchin announced Friday afternoon that Goodwin, 36, will be sworn in as the youngest senator in office to fill the seat left vacant by Byrd, who was the oldest senator in office when he died last month at the age of 92.

Goodwin confirmed that he will not run to continue representing the state in the special election expected to take place this November. Manchin has said he is interested in running. Goodwin did, however, say he is ready to make the most of his short term.

"I'm anxious to roll my sleeves up," he said.

His vote will prove critical in the first hour of his service in the Senate, said Democratic Sen. Jay Rockefeller, the senior senator from West Virginia. Goodwin will be sworn in on Tuesday afternoon, and minutes later, the Senate intends to vote on extending unemployment benefits, a proposal that has so far been blocked by a Republican filibuster.

"Carte Goodwin will make the 60th vote in what is a very necessary piece of legislation," Rockefeller said. "We will take up and pass unemployment legislation."

Goodwin said, however, he cannot support his party's interest in passing a comprehensive energy bill that includes a cap and trade system.

"With regard to cap and trade, from what I've seen of the Waxman-Markey bill," Goodwin said, referencing the cap and trade bill passed in the House, "they simply are not right for West Virginia."

He said he would be more in favor of the legislation Rockefeller, is championing, which Goodwin said "recognizes the practical effect of coal."

"I will not support any piece of legislation that threatens any West Virginia job," Goodwin said, adding that it's obvious "how strongly West Virginians feel on the issue" of energy legislation.

Earthquake in Maryland: D.C. area rocked

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a 3.6 magnitude earthquake centered in Montgomery County at 5:04 a.m. Friday. The epicenter was in Gaithersburg near I-270 and Route 124 (39.145 degrees N, 77.222 degrees W), USGS reported in a preliminary finding. Its depth was 3.1 miles.
Authorities in the District and Montgomery and Arlington counties said there were no early reports of damage. Still, many residents were dialing 911 to report the rumbling.
Mike Blanpied, a geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey, will be online Friday, July 16, at 11 a.m. ET to discuss the earthquake.

3.6-magnitude earthquake strikes Maryland

Maryland- A 3.6-magnitude earthquake struck near the Gaithersburg, Maryland, area just after 5 a.m. ET Friday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The center of the quake was about 20 miles northwest of Washington, the USGS said.

The earthquake was the largest in the area since 1974 -- and the first registering above 3.0 on the Richter scale there in that time period, said Amy Vaughan, a geophysicist at the USGS National Earthquake Information Center.
"This is a significant event for the region," she said.

About an hour after the quake, Vaughan said more than 5,500 people had reported feeling it across Maryland, in nearby Washington, and in states including West Virginia, Virginia, Delaware.

"It was really loud, like a plane flying really low. I had never felt anything like it," said Anne Ngunjiri, 30, of Gaithersburg. "I was jolted out of bed. All my neighbors woke up. After it passed, I thought it could be an earthquake, and lay in bed hoping there were no aftershocks."

Judy Rudolph, 64, said she was writing e-mails in bed in Rockville, Maryland, when her house started to shake.

"My first reaction was the noise. I thought it was an explosion," she said.

She said she'd never felt anything like it in her 31 years living there.

Until Friday, the largest earthquake recorded within a 75-kilometer (about 47 miles) radius of Gaithersberg since 1974 was a 2.7-magnitude quake in 1993, Vaughan said.

But geologically speaking, she said it was "not completely unexpected" for a 3.6-magnitude quake to hit there.

"Occasionally these things do happen even east of the Rockies, even though it's not really on a plate boundary where we expect earthquakes Faults do exist from when the continent was forming. There are small faults that do exist within this area," she said.

Vaughan said major structural damage was unlikely, but people may experience aftershocks for the next day, or even a week or two after the quake.

Washington's Homeland Security and Emergency Management Agency said no injuries or property damage had been reported.

The last earthquake in Maryland occurred on October 8, 2007, according to the USGS website. It was a 1.7-magnitude quake about 5 miles northwest of Baltimore.
